The Impact of Previously Introduced Animals

The cane toad is said to be the worst invasive species in Australia, even worse than the scourges rabbits, foxes and pigs. Despite their ugly appearance, there are other reasons for this ‘hatred’ towards them. The cane toad has impacted the biodiversity of Australia’s ecosystem since its introduction. Though there is little evidence proving so, it is believed that the cane toad has caused the death of many native fauna in Australia. The animals mainly affected are huge predators such as large snakes, quolls and goannas. Because of the toxic skin of the cane toad, many of these predators who were unfortunate enough to have eaten the frog have died from the poison.

The feral pig is a feral pest that is said to be the root of many environmental issues in the Daintree Rainforest. They thrash through the forest with immense force and consume large quantities of native flora. They spread root-rot fungus with their hooves and spread many exotic seeds and worms. They also disturb natural environment through rooting up soils, grasslands and forest litter. They are hosts for diseases.
